Earthing

Concept Explanation

Earthing (Earth wire)

Earth can be  regarded as a large reservoir of oppositely charged particle, electrons and protons. Earth on a whole is electrically neutral. By any means, if we take out or add some electrons to the earth. its charge will remain almost zero. Thus the earth is regarded as large capacitor with zero potential under all practical conditions. Any body connected to earth becomes its part and hence has zero potential.

Earthing: When a body comes in contact with the earth, either directly or indirectly, then the charges are discharged to the earth. This is called earthing. The process of transfer of charges from a charged object to the earth is called earthing or grounding.

To avoid risk of electrical shock, the metal body of appliances is earthed. Earthing means to connect the metal case of the appliance to the earth (i.e. zero potential) by means of a metal wire called earth wire (in green insulation cover). One end of the metal wire is buried in the earth.
